FAQ
Q:
Why start the Nova Arts Project?
A: We have a particular vision
of the type of theatre we wish to do and
see cultivated. Instead of hunting around
for opportunities to create our work, we’ve
decided to build our own home and to offer
the resources of that home to other, like-minded
artists.
Q:
Why classics?
A: We see classics as well-worn
broadcloth, stitched together with familiar,
universal themes. We deconstruct and re-form
this broadcloth into a new garment, with
new images and meanings. We knock the dust
off masterpieces and put a new razor-edge
onto them in order to do the work of creating
new art.
Q:
Why new plays?
A: As exciting as it is to see
great works of the past recreated and reborn,
it’s even more fun to see new works
come into the world, kicking and screaming
the whole way. We want to find those projects
that are built around challenging imagery
and full of contemporary desires, concerns
and achievements.
Q:
What does avant-garde mean to us?
A: Narrative need not be complete
but can be broken and imagistic. There is
a movement away from linearity to multiplicity,
where acts and scenes give way to a series
of evolving dramatic moments. Existing ways
of seeing the world are subverted and questioned,
including conventional methods of portraying
character and human experience. Each new
performance of a theatrical pieces is a
unique spectacle. The audience is integral
to the shared meaning making of the performance
process. Avant-garde theatre works tend
to be challenging for an audience who are
used to the time-honoured conventions of
theatre. The breaking of these expectations
and the finding of new boundaries and sensibilities
is the very point of this theatrical movement.
