Nova
Arts Project Opens Second Season With World Premiere!
HOUSTON, TX – Nova Arts Project,
Houston’s newest performance group, dedicated to recreating
classics and inspiring new works in a fearlessly theatrical
way, presents Interior, a world premiere written and directed
by Artistic Director Clinton Hopper!
Hot on the heels of their gangbusters first season, Interior
is a two-person play about a man, his plan and the people that
are always watching him. It asks the questions: when does preparation
become paranoia? How does awareness become madness?
The play opens with the main character, played by Nova Arts
Project company member Philip Hays, locked in a bunker of his
own making. He plays chess with himself, takes care of his plant,
reads, and takes constant stock of his precious rations. A mostly
silent radio is his only contact with the outside world. Fellow
company member Salvador Chevez plays the second character, who
makes a startling entrance into Hays’ bunker.
As writer and director, Clinton Hopper
drew inspiration from current American society, and says,
“Our government and media propagate a state of permanent
fear in the public mind by asserting a world view that is
populated by terrorist plots, an invasion of illegals, and
raging epidemics of avian flu and SARS. What I’m interested
in, in regards to this play, is the examination of the mind
of some pitiful, damaged jerk that completely lives in a world
described by a Fox News info crawl.”
Hopper also identifies with the main
character. “I completely hate this type of person, but
I’d better be careful, because I find his voice to sound
a lot like mine,” he says. “I am this guy, or
very easily could be, and so could we all. There’s a
universal, dark little part of the psyche that I seek to examine
and take to its logical, extreme end.”
In considering the impact that the
figurative and literal Other has on Hays’ character,
the audience will sit flush to the stage and surround it on
all sides, providing the audience with a voyeuristic experience
of the play’s action; however, the audience’s
involvement doesn’t stop there. The audience, seen by
Hays, also forwards the action of the play by their very presence
in his world.
Interior opens Friday, February 23
and runs Fridays and Saturdays through March 10 at 8:00 pm
at the Barnevelder Movement/Arts Complex at 2201 Preston Street,
just south of Minute Maid Park across US 59. Tickets are $10-$15
and reservations can be made by calling the Nova Arts Project
office at 713-623-4033 or emailing: info@novaartsproject.com.
